Why should you record at a professional recording studio? A friend of ours came up with this list, and we think it is really great. There are some advantages of recording at home, but the biggest advantage of recording at a professional studio is that you have the gear and people that know how to use the gear. Audio experts work in studios, so why would you not seek their help when you are working on an album? If I have a plumbing problem, I ask a professional plumber for help. If I have an audio problem, ask a professional audio engineer for help!

Studio-

Pros:

mostly analog processing gear

you have a professional audio engineer to help you get the sound you want

lots of microphones to choose from

acoustically treated environment

accurate play back monitors

Cons:

It costs money to book time

Home-

Pros:

Cheaper than booking a studio

you can spend as much time as you want on tracking

Cons:

you probably don’t have the same equipment as the commercial studio

your files might not save in the correct format for mixing (.WAV vs .MP3)

fewer microphone choices

the room you’re using is probably not acoustically treated

almost all digital signal chain

your monitors are not as accurate as what’s in the commercial studio

no professional engineer to help you find that perfect sound

It depends. That is one of my most favorite phrases. It seems to be said a lot around Tierra Studios lately, especially with The Art Institute of Houston students being here. Why is it said so much? Because so much of what we do as recording, mixing, and mastering engineers depends.

On what does it depend? Just about everything. The last few days we have been talking about compression, and how to use it. The thing that was not said is that it depends. It depends on what style, or genre, of music you are mixing. It depends on what compressor you are using. It depends on what microphone you used to record that instrument. It depends where you put that microphone. In short, it depends.

People that ask how to record, mix, and master music want to know the answer. Heck, we want to know the answer too!! Unfortunately, there is not one way to do things. You have to experiment and try different things. Listen to different styles/genres of music. Listen to different recording, mixing, and mastering engineers. Get out of your comfort zone and listen to music to which you would not normally listen. Then ask yourself two questions. Is this a good sound? If so, how do you achieve that sound? Then go experiment!

Just remember that “it depends”. One of the parts of “it depends” is that it is constantly changing as well. Things change in life and things change in music just as fast. With the changes in technology that happen, and have happened, has extraordinarily changed music and music production. So “it depends” will be with us for a long long time.

Yesterday we discussed compression. One post is just not enough to discuss all aspects of compression, so here are some more thoughts on the subject.

Again, here are what the four knobs on a compressor and the definitions for each knob:

Threshold: the point (dB level) at which compression begins
Ratio: the amount that signals above the threshold are reduced toward the threshold
Attack: time it takes the compressor to turn on once the signal is above the threshold (time constant)
Release: time it takes the compressor to turn off once the signal is below the threshold (time constant)

Is there one way to compress more? No. In order to get more compression, you could lower the threshold, increase the ratio, shorten the attack, or lengthen the release. By lowering the threshold, there are more decibels above the threshold, and, therefore, more signal is being compressed. With an increased ratio, the signals above the threshold are being reduced toward the threshold even more, and, therefore, the signal is being compressed harder. Shortening the attack time means the compressor turns on faster once the signal goes above the threshold, and, therefore, the compressor is on longer compressing more. Finally, with a longer release time, the compressor is compressing for a longer time once the signal goes below the threshold.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each one of these scenarios. So how do you know what to do? Experiment. Do each and see which one works best. Keep in mind that you are trying to maintain musical dynamics, and enhance the music. The music is the most important thing!

One of the interesting things with this album was the number of solos we had on the whole album. When Bob Linder and I were listening to the solos happen in real time, there was some great playing. With modern recording techniques, we are able to have a musician play the same solo multiple times, and we can then put in the solo that sounds best. It is a great advancement because the musician and producer can discuss which solo sounds the best for the song. The interesting thing I mentioned at the top of this post was that there were so many solos. That may not sound interesting in itself, but the best part about it was that we had so many choices for the solos. Almost every time a solo was played, Dr. Linder and I would look at each other as if to say that we could use that one. Then we asked the musician to play another solo. Dr. Linder and I had the same reaction time after time. We had so many solos to choose from that it was extraordinarily difficult to choose the solos. There were a lot of discussions back and forth about it. Too many good solos. What a great problem to have!!

It was really wonderful to record the rhythm sections for Gary Weldon’s album. We departed a little from our previous Texas Jazz Masters sessions because we decided to use a few different people for the rhythm section instead of the same section on every piece. Gary is an incredible musician. His trumpet, flughel horn and harmonica chops are superb. Gary, Bob and myself were able to choose many fine players from Houston to work with. Because we used such a diverse group, it allowed us to taylor make great rythm sections for Gary. If you love great music, you will ove this album.

I really enjoyed the process of recording this album not only because we had the opportunity to work with many more Houston jazz musicians than the previous two albums, but also because Gary played trumpet, flugelhorn, and harmonica. Because of Gary’s versatility, I had to be just as versatile with the microphone choices. It was really difficult to decide what to use for the flugelhorn and harmonica. What I did was set up multiple microphones for Gary to play into. Then he, Bob Linder, and I sat in the control room and listened to the results. What we ended up choosing was my Cascade VinJet for the harmonica, the Cascade FatHead and a Bradley Modified U87 on the flugelhorn, and on trumpet we used a Cascade Fathead, Bradley Modified U87 and a Soundelux 251. It was a great way to choose a mic, and it was an honor to work with such a great musician.

One of the things we try to do at Tierra Studios is de-mystify the recording process. This is the first post that helps to do that. Don’t worry, there will be a lot more!

What is compression? This is a question we get a lot here at Tierra Studios. Compression can be a lot of things. It is what happens to MP3′s and other computer files, but mostly when people refer to compression they are referring to the dynamics of a song. Dynamics are the louds and softs of music. Too often in music, especially recently, the music is lacking dynamics. This is often due to ultra-compression. Compression is not always a good thing, and needs to be done with taste. Here is the secret: you must maintain musical dynamics. This is done with four knobs on a compressor (usually there are four). This is what each of them does:

Threshold: the point (dB level) at which compression begins
Ratio: the amount that signals above the threshold are reduced toward the threshold
Attack: time it takes the compressor to turn on once the signal is above the threshold (time constant)
Release: time it takes the compressor to turn off once the signal is below the threshold (time constant)

In the next few days we will discuss what effect each one of those knobs has on compression.

Now, how does one properly compress something? There is not one way. The most important thing for us is to maintain those musical dynamics. Let the musicians do what they do best, and enhance what they did during the recording process.

I like lists. Grocery lists. To-do lists. They are all good lists. It is always interesting when I look at top lists for things as well. The internet is full of lists. As recording engineers, I think it’s really interesting to hear what others think are the top songs of all time. There are not any guidelines about these lists. There is nothing that says you should vote for the best recording, the most influential, or the best written song. I found the list of “Songs of the Century”. It was a project of the Recording Industry Association of America, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Schoastic Inc. Although the voters were not all from the music industry, it is still educational for those of us that are in the music industry. We need to ask ourselves, why are these songs on the list? Is it because of the recording quality, how influential the song is, or the writing? Then we need to ask ourselves, how can my next album/song/project be on the list for next century.

So, which songs are on the list? Here are the top 25:

Do you agree with the list? What changes would you make to this list and why? The other thing I like about lists is that there is not a correct answer. Lists generate discussion, and discussion is always good.
